Junior Section - Newsletter Feb 2010

The purpose of this newsletter is to update members and parents on the activities of the section and the plans that we have made for the coming year.

Meet the Captains – Monday 22nd March 2010 – 6.30 to 8.00pm

All juniors and parents/helpers are invited to 'kick off' the season with this informal evening where you can put names to faces, get to know everyone, and meet the club  captains.  We will have some fun activities organised so come along and join in!

You can check out the competitions and the latest news at the club website (which will also have full details of the Open week) at www.congletongolfclub.co.uk

Most of the competitions are open to all juniors and will run in two divisions – “Premiership” for handicaps of 36 and under, and “Championship” for the higher handicaps.  Premiership competitions are typically over 18 holes in whichever format, and the championship is normally 9 holes stableford.

We are always looking for people to accompany the championship competitors, so if you can spare a couple of hours to walk round with a group, that would be appreciated.
The competitions typically have a small entry fee (usually £2 premiership, £1 championship) to cover the cost of prizes.

On the subject of money, like everyone else, there's never enough!  We do get some money from the English Golf Union (EGU) and Cheshire Golf Union (see the section below called GolfMark) and from Congleton Golf Club, but we always could do with more! – if you are in a position to sponsor and event or competition with as little as £25 we would be very grateful – please speak to any of the committee.

Conduct on the Course

There were some behaviour issues last year which damaged the reputation of Congleton Junior section, both at home and away, so please remember that even if you are having a bad day, your actions can affect your playing partners, and so you must remain polite at all times and show the respect that is such an important part of the game.

Golfmark and coaching

We are in the process of applying for this accreditation which will allow us to continue to claim funds from the English Golf Union (EGU).  If we are successful we will become part of:
·
A national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner friendly golf facilities
·      Any golf club affiliated to EGU/EWGA may apply to gain the GolfMark Award
The three key areas within the golf club which are assessed are:
·
Coaching & Playing
·
Club Environment (including sports equity & ethics)
·      Child Protection & Duty of CarePlease speak to any of us if you want more information or want to get more involved. As part of this, Golf Professional Andrew Preston has looked at his diary and the current suggested coaching dates are as follows:Monday 29th March – Wednesday 31st March – Friday 2nd April - 10 am till 12 noon Monday 31st May – Wednesday 3rd June – Friday 5th June - 10 am till 12 noon

These sessions will be open to all Junior members and will be paid for from the GolfMark grant – details could change, so please ask and/or keep an eye on the notice board for more information…

“Championship” Exchange Day at Onneley

We have again organised an exchange day with Onneley golf course at Easter (Thursday 8th April 2010) and in the summer (August – date to be advised) for any “Championship” juniors who would like to take part in a friendly game at a different course.

Details to follow – keep an eye out on the notice board for news.
