Puppies are
susceptible to roundworms and can be infected at birth from their mothers.
This information provides worming guidelines on how to protect them from worm infestation and potential damage. Vet advice
is welcomed and suggested to all.
If you have
a new puppy then you can join a pet registration scheme. This will design your worming and flea management program for you and then automatically send the products out when
the treatments are due. You can rest assured that your puppy will be protected from worms and fleas and also that you
have minimised the risk of any children being infected with worms. There is no charge for this service. You simply
pay for the products that you have delivered.
When
should I start worming my puppy ?
Bearing in mind
that there are many worming products on the market place and slightly different timing scales, guidance from your local vet
will be welcomed and a programme put in place to suit the type of dog.
Generally you
should start worming at two weeks of age and then if you are using Bob Martin All in one de-wormer every two weeks until 8
weeks of age or if you are using Panacur at 5 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks of age.
Follow instructions
accordingly to the products information sheet.
If you have
a puppy then the Panacur liquid suspension, or Drontal puppy, is suitable because it doses at very low body weights,
and is effective against protozoa Giardia.spp.
All of these
products can be purchased readily from your local vet or specialist pet shop.
We have prepared
a weight chart that shows the correct worming doses for puppies.
Please find these details as a guide, this is what my Dogs have been brought up on and different
breeders and vets have varied opinions, I am sure you will do your own research and take advice from a qualified vet.

Puppies,
kittens and children
Puppies and
kittens can be dangerous to small children if they are not wormed. Children play with and cuddle their pets and they play
in infected gardens and sandpits. If they get infected then they could have permanent eye damage and even blindness
if left untreated. The roundworm concerned, Toxoxara canis, can also cause severe allergic reactions in children such
as asthma and eczema.
Preventative
measures to ensure that children are not infected
o Ensure
they always wash their hands before eating
o Encourage them to avoid sucking dirty fingers
o Don’t allow children to play on the ground and eat at
the same time
o Be sure that floors are clean where children play
o Don’t leave young children unsupervised with a pet
o Fence round play areas to exclude puppies
o Cover sandpits to keep out puppies and kittens
o Do not let your puppy foul children’s play areas
